WHAT MATT STANDS FOR
MATT IN THE NEWS
When I think about the role of Sheriff and the strengths that I bring to the table three themes come to mind – leadership, service, and communication.
Leadership.
The ability to move a group in a common direction with a common goal. One of the greatest opportunities that I have had in my law enforcement career was to serve as the School Resource Officer (SRO) for six years. As SRO I learned of the positive impact law enforcement could have on students.
A SRO’s role as law enforcement officer, social worker, and informal counselor enabled me to work along with teachers and administrators for one common goal – the success of the students. Every day was an opportunity to see how we could have a positive effect on that outcome. As Sheriff I want to lead
with the idea of law enforcement having a positive outcome in the lives of our community, by establishing and maintaining positive partnerships throughout the community. I believe that we can accomplish this goal.
Service.
The Sheriff’s Office vision statement is "To be the foremost leader in excellent public service in the State of Wyoming." As your next Sheriff I intend to make this vision reality. One of the many responsibilities I have at the Sheriff’s Office is to oversee Search and Rescue. To do that I decided to start at the beginning and work my way up through the training ranks just as the volunteers have done. I am very proud to be considered a member of the Search and Rescue team. Working side by side with the volunteers has taught me the importance of service. Teton County Search and Rescue is a tribe, a family that works together to serve our community. As your next Sheriff I plan to instill that feeling of service throughout our entire department.
Communication.
It is critical that at the Sheriff’s Office we communicate safety concerns and information to the public in a clear and transparent manner. As your next Sheriff I believe that this is something that our Office needs to work on. We should be using all available resources to get good information out to the community about issues of public safety in a timely manner. Communication also means being able to listen. By maintaining solid community partnerships I believe it is the role of the Sheriff to listen to the needs on the community.
